The opportunity
We are looking for a Senior Rail Engineer with significant track design responsibilities and experience to provide design development, project management, and multi-disciplinary coordination in the design process by overseeing internal teams and sub consultant partners to deliver these within agreed timelines and budgets. This position will lead and direct project delivery teams, act as the key contact with the client for technical matters, and ensure communication is maintained between the team members. The position will also involve support of business development efforts including client and teaming partner engagement, preparation of proposals, and participation in professional activities such as attendance and presentation at conferences. The ideal candidate will be looking to further their career and gain invaluable experience within an established multi-disciplinary engineering firm in a position of responsibility.
- Participate in and lead design activities.
- Supervise junior staff and assist senior staff on a variety of projects.
- Ensure communication is maintained between team members.
- Coordinate communication and the flow of information between design team members.
- Coordinate activities and deliverables between design team members.
- Facilitate and track the resolution of design decisions.
- Apply expertise in civil and track engineering to manage elements of the design process of a multi-disciplinary design team where Arup is the Prime or lead designer.
- Provide guidance and expertise to deliver construction-ready design packages.
- Ensure design compliance with Arup’s Quality Management systems.
- Foster creativity and innovation through coordination with a multi-disciplinary team to meet project goals and deliver high-quality technical excellence.
- Write reports for internal and external purposes based on findings.
- Present technical material in traditional and innovative ways for review by technical and non-technical audiences.
- Act as the key contact with clients for technical matters.
- Understand client’s goals and aspirations and incorporate them into the design and management efforts of projects.
- Act as Project Manager on projects or support the Project Manager in establishing and monitoring the design scope, schedule, and resource plan for the design team.
- Participate in client user groups and stakeholder meetings.
- Assess client needs and identify relevant connections within Arup capabilities and services.
- Understand trends and best practices in Rail in North America.
- Support business development efforts to secure planning work and build client relationships.
- Leverage connections with professional colleagues, develop marketing leads, and prepare marketing proposals and materials.
- Participate in local and national engineering associations such as ASCE or AREMA.
The skills
- Bachelor’s Degree/Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant design experience in civil and track engineering, preferably in the rail transit industry, with light rail experience highly preferred.
- PE License in New York, or ability to obtain appropriate certification within 1 year of employment.
- Experience with direct client interaction for major transit agencies or railroads as a discipline team leader or project manager.
- Experience with Bentley MicroStation design packages, including Open Rail Designer.
- Experience with AutoCAD design packages, including Civil 3D.

Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in New York is $113,000 to $117,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of New York will differ.
